Mobility and networking expert John Byrne joined Infonetics (now IHS) in October 2014, bringing with him more than 15 years of experience as a technology analyst, practice and research director, and strategist.

A thought leader and frequent commentator on wireless industry trends, John has appeared on American Public Media's MarketPlace radio program, and is frequently quoted in the press, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Bloomberg Business News, and Business Week. He is also an expert judge for industry and technology innovation awards, such as the M2M Evolution Conference’s “Battle of the Platforms” and Mobile World Congress’s Global Mobile Awards.

As the North American Communications Industry Research Lead at Accenture LLP, John focused on key priority areas, including the Internet of Things (IoT), mobility, digital services, and cloud services. He also headed up the content task force for Accenture’s Communications, Media, and Telecommunications operating group.

Previously, John was Research Director of IDC’s wireless network infrastructure program, where he contributed to the firm’s first machine-to-machine (M2M) taxonomy and published IDC’s first forecast addressing service provider WiFi. He was also the Director of Technology Business Research’s networking and mobility practice, where he guided coverage of M2M, cloud computing, and new handset platforms and operating systems. Prior to that, John was a wireless analyst at Kagan Research and a conference director at the Center for Business Intelligence in Burlington, Massachusetts.

As Sr. Principal Analyst for the Internet of Things at IHS, John now leads coverage of the M2M and IoT enabling technologies and network architectures that allow networked devices to connect and share real-time data and perform actions without the manual assistance of humans. Specifically, he tracks the fast-growing connected home (security, entertainment, social, productivity), connected car (infotainment, telematics), connected health (mHealth, healthcare), connected device (smartphones, tablets, mobile broadband devices), smart grid (utility), and transport (asset management) segments. In this role, John authors market share and forecast reports, surveys, and opinion pieces on the M2M and IoT technologies, services, trends, industry players, business models, and best practices that are driving investment in the market.

He also advises clients on positioning, product development, strategy, partnerships, and business planning to help identify new market opportunities and create differentiated products and services.
