WAN optimization market way up; enterprise router sales up 6%

BOSTON, Massachusetts, October 8, 2007— The worldwide WAN optimization market jumped 31% to $156 million in 2Q07, and is up 85% from a year ago, according to Infonetics Research’s latest Enterprise Routers and WAN Optimization Appliances report.

The enterprise router market is up as well, with worldwide revenue increasing 6% to $1.1 billion, the report shows.

“The enterprise router market somewhat redeemed itself after an extremely weak first quarter. The market is back to year-over-year growth, with 2Q07 up enough to offset 1Q07. Cisco still rules the market by far, but was passed for the first time by the newly combined 3Com/H3C in the Asia Pacific region for total unit share, and Siemens captured the #1 spot in the North American low-end segment,” said Infonetics Research directing analyst Matthias Machowinski.

Other highlights from the report:

  • Worldwide revenue for all categories of enterprise routers—high-end, mid-range, branch, and low-end/SOHO—are up in 2Q07
  • The average revenue per unit for low-end routers dropped 17% in 2Q07
  • 41% of all enterprise router sales come from North America in 2Q07, 32% from EMEA, 22% from Asia Pacific, and 5% from CALA
  • Most vendors in the WAN optimization market posted strong sequential growth in 2Q07; Riverbed maintains their leadership in worldwide revenue share, and Cisco passes Packeteer for the first time to take 2nd place

Infonetics’ report tracks WAN optimization appliances and high-end, mid-range, branch, and low-end enterprise routers, and includes port detail (T1/E1/J1, T3/E3/J3, OC3/STM1, OC12/STM4). Forecasts and market share are updated quarterly and cover all regions. Companies tracked include 3Com/H3C, ADTRAN, Cisco, Expand, Huawei, Ipanema, Juniper, Nortel, Packeteer, Riverbed, Siemens, Vanguard, and others.
