Content security gateway sales hit $1.6B in 2007

CAMPBELL, California, March 19, 2008—Sales of content security gateways are up 9% in 4Q07 over 3Q07, and are up 36% for the year, hitting $1.6 billion in 2007, according to Infonetics Research’s latest Content Security Appliances and Software report. Unit shipments are up 41% for the year.

“The content security market is moving forward rapidly due to strong performance by vendors of all type and size serving a very real need to secure networks,” said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for network security at Infonetics Research. “The uncertain state of the US economy could actually help bolster this market; some buyers increase spending during a prolonged downtime because of increased criminal/hacking activity.”

Other report highlights:

  • The content security appliance and software market is forecast to hit $2.5 billion in 2011
  • Web/malware appliances accounted for half of all content security gateway appliance revenue in 4Q07, messaging appliances accounted for just under half, and integrated appliances made up the rest
  • Symantec leads in overall content security gateway revenue market share in 4Q07, followed by Trend Micro, BlueCoat, and McAfee; Cisco jumps to 5th place after reporting IronPort revenue
  • BlueCoat leads the fast-growing content security appliance segment; Trend Micro continues to lead the software segment
