CAMPBELL, California, March 12, 2008—The worldwide broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) market, which includes DSL and cable modems, digital home gateways, and voice terminal adapters, totaled $4.6 billion in 2007, up 10% from 2006, reports Infonetics Research in the 4Q07 edition of Broadband CPE and Subscribers.
“Broadband connectivity continues to grow around the world as service providers increasingly offer bundles of voice, internet, music, gaming, and video services over broadband access to residential subscribers,” said Mark Showalter, the new directing analyst for broadband networks at Infonetics Research. “Intense competition between cable MSOs and traditional wireline service providers remains the key driver for new CPE innovations.”
Other highlights from the report:
- The worldwide broadband CPE market totaled $1.2 billion in 4Q07, up 9% from 3Q07
- Infonetics Research forecasts the broadband CPE market to hit $6.6 billion in 2011
- The number of standard and wideband cable broadband subscribers topped 68 million worldwide in 2007; the number of DSL subscribers neared 206 million
- Digital home gateway sales surged in 2007, with worldwide revenue up 312% from 2006

- Motorola surged into second for worldwide revenue share in 4Q07, while Arris dropped from first to third
- In 4Q07, over half of all broadband CPE revenue came from DSL CPE, and over a third came from cable CPE
- EMEA is expected to lead in broadband CPE sales due to the larger number of DSL subscribers in the region, and higher expected numbers of IPTV and voice over broadband service subscribers
