BOSTON, Massachusetts, March 5, 2008—Sales of Ethernet switches dipped 2% from 3Q07 to 4Q07, but are up 9% for the year, growing to $17.3 billion worldwide in 2007 from 2006, according to Infonetics Research’s latest Ethernet and Application Switches report.
“The Ethernet switch market had an expected seasonally down quarter, although the market did slightly better than expectations. Surprisingly, emerging segments didn’t significantly buck the trend of seasonality; only the 1G unmanaged fixed configuration Ethernet switch segment grew strongly in the fourth quarter,” said Infonetics Research’s Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data.
“On the vendor front, 3Com’s revenue share nearly doubled in 2007 after buying out Huawei’s ownership interest in H3C. Aside from that, there weren’t any significant high-level market share shake-ups in the switch market this year,” Machowinski added.
Other report highlights:
- The application switch market passed the $1 billion mark in 2007
- Best performing segment in 2007: fixed managed Layer 3 Ethernet switches, revenue for which jumped 35% worldwide, driven by strong 1G and 10G port shipments
- Cisco continues to lead the overall Ethernet and application switch market by far, and managed to boost revenue market share by 1 point to 66% in 2007
- ProCurve, Nortel, and 3Com/H3C, who each have roughly 4% to 5% of worldwide revenue, are Cisco’s closest competitors
- Cisco and F5 continue to dominate in the application switch space
