DSL equipment market up 9% in 2Q09; Huawei and ZTE neck and neck

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, September 8, 2009—Communications market research firm Infonetics Research released its second quarter (2Q09) Broadband Aggregation Hardware and Subscribers report.

ANALYST NOTE

“After a miserable first quarter, the broadband aggregation DSL segment was bound to see some pickup in most of the major markets, and it did. There is typically an increase in DSL port shipments in the second quarter as winter weather recedes and deep fiber and outside plant deployments pick back up in North America and EMEA. This traditional increase, paired with the increased demand in the quarter, helped to lift the overall broadband aggregation market,” explains Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband and video at Infonetics Research.

BROADBAND AGGREGATION MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Worldwide broadband aggregation DSL ports (from DSLAMs, NGDLCs, and MSAPs) increased to 24 million in 2Q09, up 12% from 1Q09
  • Broadband aggregation hardware revenue increased 9% to $961 million in 2Q09 from 1Q09
  • Huawei held onto its worldwide revenue share lead in the quarter, despite ZTE's 10 percentage point increase
  • Multiservice access platforms (MSAPs) continue to fare well, with worldwide revenue up 22% quarter over quarter and up 33% year-over-year, mainly due to big gains in Asia Pacific, and despite postponement of MSAP purchases in the US until the rules and definitions around the $7.2 billion Broadband Stimulus Package are clarified
