Enterprise router market stabilizing in North America

Boston, MASSACHUSETTS, September 1, 2009—Market research firm Infonetics Research released its second quarter (2Q09) Enterprise Routers and WAN Optimization Appliances report.

ANALYST NOTE

“Commoditization and declining prices, erratic customer orders, and a weak economic climate around the globe combined to keep enterprise router vendor revenue down overall in the second quarter, even as unit shipments increased in the high- and low-end segments. While router sales in all regions are off significantly from a year ago, North America appears to be stabilizing, with sales flat from 1Q09, and down the least of all regions year-over-year,” explains Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research.

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Worldwide enterprise router revenue totaled $709 million in 2Q09, down 9% from 1Q09
  • Year-over-year, from 2Q08 to 2Q09, low-end router shipments are up 30%, but revenue is down 38%
  • High-end router shipments are up 6% from 1Q09, and revenue is expected to pick up, as companies have to make investments in their network core to keep up with rising traffic
  • Heavyweight Cisco saw an 11% decline in enterprise router revenue, but many vendors posted decent increases in the second quarter, including 3Com and OneAccess
  • The WAN optimization market declined 6% in 2Q09 to $226 million, a much smaller decline than in 1Q09, and should grow in 3Q09
  • Blue Coat and Riverbed each gained a point of revenue market share in 2Q09
