Network security market shows signs of stabilization and growth in 2Q09

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, September 15, 2009—Market research firm Infonetics Research released its second quarter (2Q09) Network Security Appliances and Software market size, market share, and forecast report.

ANALYST NOTE

“Last quarter we predicted small and medium business security spending would come back faster than enterprise spending, as it takes SMBs less time to get budgets in place, and this has borne out to be true. To highlight this point, SMB mainstay SonicWALL’s network security revenue increased 10% this quarter. We also noted that networking companies with security offerings (like Cisco, whose security revenue was down 9% in 2Q09) will likely find security spending bounces back slower than it does for security-focused companies. This trend also is bearing out, as large network infrastructure rollouts are seeing more significant delays than security-specific purchases,” explains Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for network security at Infonetics Research.

NETWORK SECURITY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • The worldwide network security appliance and software market is forecast to reach $5.7 billion in 2013
  • Cisco remains the revenue-leading vendor overall with 35% of total network security appliances and software in 2Q09, but is down 3 points from 1Q09
  • Check Point gained 2 points of revenue share in 2Q09 from 1Q09, solidifying their second place spot in the worldwide network security market
  • Juniper fared well in the SSL VPN gateway segment in 2Q09, a segment forecast to grow in the double digits over the next year
  • Worldwide intrusion detection and intrusion prevention system (IDS and IPS) product revenue sequentially grew 5.4% in 2Q09
