Telecom operators ramp investment in subscriber data management to address pain points

CAMPBELL, CALIFORNIA, May 12, 2010—Market research firm Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) released the first edition of its 2010 biannual Subscriber Data Management Software and Services market size and forecast report.

ANALYST NOTE

“The cost of managing and maintaining multiple subscriber databases has become too much of a pain point for operators to avoid any longer, which is why the subscriber data management market is doing so well despite the economic downturn. The marketing and customer care arms of telecom operators everywhere are frustrated by the lack of a consolidated view of the subscriber, because it limits their ability to cross-sell, up-sell, create value-added services, and offer single sign-on to their customers,” notes Shira Levine, directing analyst for next gen OSS and policy at Infonetics Research.

“As subscriber mobile data usage and quality expectations grow, the capabilities that SDM technology offers, combined with advanced policy controls and subscriber data analysis, will be essential for operators to proactively meet customer needs, manage network resources, and maintain high-quality service,” Levine adds.

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Infonetics Research forecasts subscriber data management (SDM) software and services revenue to grow to $1.5 billion worldwide in 2014
  • The key driver for telecom operator investment in SDM technology is the need to reduce the cost of managing and maintaining multiple subscriber databases and create a unified view of a subscriber’s service profile, preferences, and network and service usage
  • Interest in using SDM to enable 3G data offload is on the rise in both North America and Western Europe, as operators look to alleviate strain on their 3G networks caused by increased smartphone usage
  • The machine-to-machine (M2M) market is driving SDM investment in Europe, and soon in North America, as operators seek to better track data sent between devices and make that data available for use by applications
  • Policy servers will be more tightly integrated into subscriber data management solutions offered by major equipment vendors and IT integrators, as evidenced by Tekelec’s recent acquisition of both Camiant and Blueslice
