Optical network hardware market up 5% in 4Q09, buoyed by gains in North America and EMEA

Boston, MASSACHUSETTS, February 15, 2010—Communications market research firm Infonetics Research (www.twitter.com/infonetics) released vendor market share from the fourth quarter (4Q09) edition of its Optical Network Hardware forecast report

ANALYST NOTE

“Huawei was the top-selling optical network hardware vendor in 2009, with highest revenue in three out of four quarters. Alcatel-Lucent edged past Huawei in the fourth quarter, but not enough to take back its optical crown for the year,” notes Andrew Schmitt, Infonetics Research’s directing analyst for optical.

“Optical network hardware revenue dropped 14% worldwide in 2009, despite a modest gain in the Asia Pacific region. Even if the market posts 15% gains in 2010, it would still be short of the 2007–2008 spending levels in EMEA and North America. We do expect to see healthy growth in those two regions in 2010, which will help the industry return to a 6% to 8% long-term growth trend line. The Asia Pacific region is tougher to project because it is very hard to tell which growth is organic and which is liquidity-driven synthetic spending,” adds Schmitt.

OPTICAL MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Worldwide, the optical network hardware market, despite 5% sequential growth in the fourth quarter, dropped 14% in 2009 from 2008
  • Asia Pacific was the only region to post annual growth, albeit modest, in optical hardware revenue in 2009
  • For the quarter, EMEA and North America posted healthy sequential growth (3Q09 to 4Q09), while Asia Pacific posted a loss
  • Other than Huawei, the only vendors that increased optical market share in 2009 were the vendors that focused on the optical edge, such as Fujitsu, Adtran, and ADVA
    • Large and small vendors that sell into the optical edge market were lifted by increasing service provider investment in mobile backhaul and the expansion of wavelength services
  • While Huawei posted solid revenue gains in 2009, it faces significant headwinds in 2010, as historically high Chinese service provider capital expenditure (“capex”) levels are ratcheted back, and as spending recoveries continue to take hold in North America and EMEA
  • Carriers continued to slow 40G deployments, a pause that began in 3Q09
