Security client survey indicates new opportunity for vendors despite strength of McAfee and Symantec

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, January 26, 2010—As part of its Continuous Research Service (CRS) series of analyst notes and surveys, Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) yesterday published Security Client Deployment Strategies and Vendor Ratings: North American Enterprise Survey.

ANALYST NOTE

"The security client market in North America is a large market crowded with a long list of players but dominated by a few serious incumbents, namely Symantec/Norton and McAfee. However, changes in the way people use networks are creating opportunities in many segments of IT infrastructure, and client security is one of them. Companies looking to exploit new opportunities in client security should focus energy and attention on new problems like smartphones and netbooks, or different ways of solving old problems like offering cloud-based solutions, otherwise it’s more or less impossible to get noticed," advises Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research.

SELECT SECURITY CLIENT SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • One of the biggest security problems companies face is getting consistent protection for all the devices used by their employees; we live in a multi-device and multi-OS world
  • 61% of survey respondents have purchased a cloud-based solution or hybrid cloud/client-based solution to replace traditional security clients or will consider doing so
  • The three client security players with the most overall brand awareness -- Symantec, McAfee, and Microsoft -- also fare best on Infonetics’ vendor scorecard, with respondents giving highest overall marks to Symantec and McAfee, who are neck and neck in most criteria

SURVEY SYNOPSIS

For this survey, conducted in January 2010, Infonetics asked security client purchase decision-makers at 103 US and Canadian companies with 20 or more employees that use security client software about their buying strategies, deployment drivers and barriers, and vendors, including vendor brand awareness, familiarity, ratings, and top three client security vendors.

The survey features end-user ratings of six security client vendors: Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft, Symantec, Trend Micro, and ZoneAlarm/Check Point on eight criteria: security client technology, product roadmap, security, management, price-to-performance ratio (value), pricing, financial stability, and service and support.

Companies named by respondents in response to questions about vendor familiarity include AhnLab, Avast, BitDefender, Computer Associates, F-Secure, GriSoft, GuardianEdge, Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft, Panda, Smobile, Sophos, Symantec/Norton, Trend Micro, and ZoneAlarm/Check Point.
