Intrusion prevention system (IPS) vendor ratings survey confirms Cisco’s top-dog status

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, July 6, 2010—As part of its Continuous Research Service (CRS) series of analyst notes and surveys on the network security market, Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) today released excerpts from its IPS Product Vendor Ratings: North American Enterprise Survey.

ANALYST NOTE

“Cisco is without a doubt the leader in the intrusion prevention system market. In a very short time, Cisco went from being severely underestimated as an IPS player to leading IPS revenue share and brand awareness. McAfee, IBM ISS, Sourcefire, and TippingPoint (post HP integration) have the best chance of competing head-to-head with Cisco for pure IPS sales over the next 2 years, but we expect Cisco to maintain the lead in market share and brand awareness as long they remain interested in offering pure IPS solutions,” notes Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research.

SELECT IPS SECURITY SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • While the IPS market is relatively small, it is hotly contested and fast growing, forecast by Infonetics to jump from about $800 million in 2009 to just over $1.2 billion in 2014
  • Many respondents are not sure whose IPS products they will buy in the future, which means there is still opportunity for challengers in the market
  • In an unprompted question asking who respondents consider to be the top 3 IPS product manufacturers, Cisco was named by 38% of the enterprises surveyed

SURVEY SYNOPSIS

Infonetics Research’s short IPS Product Vendor Ratings survey looks at how users feel about the major IPS vendors: which ones they use, who catches their attention, and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the major IPS vendors.

For the survey, conducted in June 2010, Infonetics asked IPS purchase decision-makers at 105 US and Canadian companies with at least 100 employees that use IPS products about their buying strategies, deployment drivers and barriers, and vendors.

In addition to unaided (unprompted) brand awareness responses, the survey features respondent ratings of 9 IPS vendors, including analysis of the top 4 and the bottom 5: Check Point, Cisco, Enterasys, IBM ISS, Juniper, McAfee, Sourcefire, Symantec, and TippingPoint, based on 8 criteria: IPS technology, product roadmap, security, management, price-to-performance ratio (value), pricing, financial stability, and service and support.
