Airvana jumps to top of femtocell leaderboard, market poised for explosive growth in 2012

London, UK, September 16, 2011—Technology market research firm Infonetics Research today released excerpts from its second quarter (2Q11) 2G/3G/4G Femtocell Equipment market share, market size, and forecast report, which tracks femtocells for GSM/GPRS, CDMA, W-CDMA/HSPA, TD-SCDMA, and CDMA2000/EV-DO networks, and forecasts the market for 4G femtocells based on LTE.

ANALYST NOTE

"Although global femtocell revenue grew 40% from 2Q10 to 2Q11, indicating that the market is accelerating and has started to achieve some scale over the past 12 months, it is the potential future scale of the femtocell market that gives cause for excitement. The global adoption of mobile phones and explosion of data-driven mobile devices (namely tablets) suggests a growing role for femtocells in supporting coverage and capacity requirements. We anticipate that femtocells will gain mass-scale traction in 2012, at which point the year-over-year unit growth rate will jump to over 100%, and will stay at triple-digit levels in 2013," notes Richard Webb, directing analyst for microwave and small cells at Infonetics Research.

FEMTOCELL EQUIPMENT MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Total global revenue from femtocells used in consumer, enterprise, rural and public spaces increased 18% quarter-over-quarter (1Q11 to 2Q11)
  • Airvana jumped ahead of Cisco/ip.access and Alcatel-Lucent to take the lead in overall femtocell market share in 2Q11
  • Infonetics forecasts the global 2G, 3G, and 4G femtocell market to grow to $2.98 billion by 2015
  • Sales of 4G (LTE and WiMAX) femtocells are expected to excel rapidly once they begin shipping, but will be modest compared to 3G femtocells for some years
