Room for niche players in security client software market, buyer survey shows

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, February 3, 2011—Market research firm Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) today released excerpts from its Mobile and Desktop Security Client Strategies and Vendor Leadership: North American Enterprise Survey. The survey, published January 27, is 1 of 5 security surveys in Infonetics' 2011 Security Continuous Research Service (CRS), a series of enterprise and service provider surveys and analysis on the security market.

ANALYST NOTE

“If you're not Microsoft, Symantec/Norton or McAfee and you're trying to sell client security solutions in North America, to make headway you need a revolutionary technology that makes you a tasty acquisition target or you need a laser focus on a small niche market or solution that doesn't require you to have broad brand awareness. Yes, the 3 incumbents dominate brand awareness and will for the foreseeable future, but our recent survey confirms that buyers are still trying to solve basic problems, like protecting new operating systems and emerging devices (smartphones, tablets, netbooks, etc.), improving client security performance, maintaining the same software version on all devices, etc. Vendors that can solve new problems or old problems in new ways (via cloud and hybrid solutions or integrated inbound and outbound security, for example) are likely to get noticed in this crowded market,” observes Jeff Wilson, Infonetics Research's principal analyst for security.

SELECT CLIENT SECURITY SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Theft prevention and accidental data leakage prevention are the #1 drivers for enterprises deploying client security
  • Enterprises are getting their ducks in a row and trying to develop a strategy for smartphone security ahead of mainstream threat events
  • 31% of the enterprises interviewed said they weren't sure from which vendor they would buy security clients for smartphones, and 16% said they plan to buy from a different vendor than their chosen desktop and laptop client security vendor
  • Enterprise security players like Juniper (who bought SMobile) have an opportunity to gain traction in the overall client security market by integrating security for mobile devices with their network security story, but it's still an uphill battle against the giant client players
  • Cisco's strong presence in the enterprise and in network security, and their position as a leading VPN vendor (including being one of two vendors with VPN clients available on Apple's App Store) helps boost their visibility in the client security market

SURVEY SYNOPSIS

For this survey, conducted in January 2011, Infonetics asked purchase decision-makers at 108 US and Canadian medium and large companies that use security client software about buying strategies, expenditures, deployment drivers and barriers, and vendors, including vendor brand awareness, familiarity, ratings, and top 3 client security vendors.

The Mobile and Desktop Security Client Strategies and Vendor Leadership survey features end-user ratings of 10 security client vendors: Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft, Symantec/Norton, Trend Micro, GriSoft (AVG), Juniper, Sophos, Webroot, and ZoneAlarm/Check Point/PointSec. Leading vendors were selected based on 8 important buying criteria: security client technology, product roadmap, security, management, price-to-performance ratio (value), pricing, financial stability, and service and support.

Companies named by respondents in response to open-ended questions in the survey include AhnLab, Avast, BitDefender, Cisco, Computer Associates, F-Secure, Grisoft (AVG), HP, IBM, Juniper/SMobile, Kaspersky, Lookout, McAfee, Microsoft, Oracle, Panda, Sophos, Symantec/Norton, Trend Micro, Webroot, and ZoneAlarm/Check Point/Pointsec.
